Moist, Hot Breath...

Feb 06, 2009

Ugh!! That was so disgusting!!

Kupo? What's the matter now, Kiki?

I stripped down and began scrubbing myself with the loofah before telling Sarima about my adventures.

I had seen the dance troupe in Jeuno a few times and each time I passed by thought, well I could do that...
So I expressed this to Shagrath one afternoon and he said, well let's learn to become dancers!
I gleefully agreed.
What I didn't know was... We had to travel to the past.
I knew this was possible from overhearing the members of the linkshell discuss it.
I did not know exactly how they were able to bridge time itself.
I did not know about the... Maws.
I shudder even now at the thought of them!!

Sha-chan and I met up in Upper Jeuno and spoke to Laila who sent us to find a Stardust Pebble.
Having never heard of such a thing, I asked the loose-hipped mithra when she took a break from her gyrating.
She expressed concern about my natural dancer ability and wanted me to muster up the courage to dance on the stage at the Lion Springs Tavern.
I'm not too fond of San d'Oria as it is, but I didn't want to appear a wilting flower!

Once in San d'Oria I changed to my pretty red Savage Separates. Sha-chan was already perfectly dressed in his Puppetmaster attire. Though I could not resist suggesting he don a subligar! Heheheheeee!!
Of course he refused saying that he did not have one for the job.

Sadly, both our foray's on stage were not well received by the uppity San d'Orian audience.
Shagrath said it was just nerves, but I knew I could have done better...
Regardless, we headed back to Jeuno to tell Rhea we had completed her request.

What she told us got me rrrreally fired up!
The last time she had seen a Stardust Pebble was over 20 years ago in Jugner Forest. They had been so popular that finding one now would be impossible.
I was furious!

Oh Sha-chan! I want to SLAP that snobby blond troupe leader for thinking to send us on an impossible quest... Promising to teach us... How arrogant!!

Kia, calm down. You forget, we are magic.

We are?

Certainly. Come with me, I'll show you how we can go back in time 20 years.

Is... is that safe? What if we somehow alter the present?

Well you need not worry about that, we won't be heading into any cities... this time.

Okay...

Sha-chan led me out into Batallia Downs and straight up to a Cavernous Maw.
My eyes went wide with fright. Was it.. alive?! It had teeth... nay, FANGS!
An eerie odor wafted out and then its vines shuddered and it let out a throaty roar!
At first I was petrified with fright, but as I watched a miasma issue forth from it's open jaws turn from lavender to rose to glowing green I regained some of my wits.
I turned and tried to run, but it was too late. I felt my poor tail being sucked toward potential oblivion.
Why would Sha-chan subject me to such a thing?!?!
The more I tried to run, the more this monstrosity would wrench me toward it.
I felt it's hot, moist breath all over my body and tried to scream, but found no sound would issue forth from my lungs.

Everything went dark and then I could hear a disembodied metallic voice drifting toward me.
I somehow was standing, and found myself staring up at... What in Goddess' name was that?!.
Hovering above me was some circular shaped... being? Object? In it's center was a round opening that had... were they teeth or jagged rock? I could not tell. Around the opening were small oblong lights that held an eerie glow.
Where was I?!
I looked around and realized I was at the edge of a.. road or cliff... Behind me was some sort of structure, perhaps a castle? Before I could get a closer look something that resembled a gathering thunder bolt began to spark to life right before me.
Foolishly I reached out my hand as if to touch this anomaly.
I caught but a glimpse of what appeared to be a small black cat before I was jettisoned backward off the cliff and into the void.

The next thing I remember is waking up face down in tall grass.
I could hear the husky voice of a man say... "This place wouldn't be my first choice for naptime..."
Oh Goddess no... what would they do to me if they assumed I was unconscious?!?
Where was Sha-chan to prevent unspeakable horrors from being committed against me?!
As I drew myself up to my knees, the younger soldier drew his sword demanding I state my name and regiment.
I could only shake my head, confused.
It was then that the older hume told the man to relax, that I didn't bite.
Was that a gibe?
They then sent me south with Altana's blessing since I was not permitted entry to Jeuno and rode off.
I heard the Maw make a gurgle type noise and clenched my fists, once again fearful ... and found I held tight a white feather.
Where..?

Kia!

SHA-CHAN!!!

It was all I could do to restrain myself from running to him and burying my face in his shirt.
How childish... I knew I had to dismiss my anxiety. So I swallowed hard and walked toward him instead.

You have to go back through the Maw before we continue.

I.. WHAT!? Sha-chan no... I was in a void and then I don't know what...

Kia, come on it will be okay I'll be right beside you.

But it's... so CREEPY!

Don't you want to finish this quest? Prove Laila wrong?

No. I wanted to cry, but again I quelled my fright and stepped up to the maw, trembling.
Not of my own accord, the fist where I clenched the white feather raised and I could feel that hot breath once again, and the feeling of being sucked into the unknown...
It only reminded me of unspeakable horrors...

This time when I opened my eyes, the surroundings seemed more familiar. And there was Sha-chan but a pace away, grinning.

What?

Well I fear I have to tell you... That you must do that once more, since we need to find the stone in Jugner Forest in the past.

Why didn't we just go when I was therrrre?!?!

I didn't care that I was wailing like a child... If this was how to go to and from the past, I wanted no part of it!

You'll get used to in, in time.

I don't know that I care to Shagrath!!

Oh come now, it isn't all that bad. You mean to tell me you don't like hot moist breath on your neck?

I scowled at him and stepped up to the accursed Maw again.
At least this time the void was quick and I alighted on my feet, not my face.
Not a moment later Shagrath was beside me, reminding me to use sneak and invisible enchantments.
After some time, we arrived at the lake in Jugner Forest and easily found the stone.
While there, we met Laila, but as a child. Even at that young age, her dancing was good. When she scampered off with her elvaan attendant, Shagrath and I made our way back to present-time Jeuno to deliver the Stardust Pebble to adult Laila.
Oh she sure was surprised when Sha-chan and I made the impossible possible!
For our efforts, she had the mithra smack us around a bit and saying we had to learn the martial aspect of dance before we would be permitted to join her troupe.
