Overwhelm

Feb 01, 2009

I thought for sure I would not have to face some of the horror stories that I have heard as a result of missions connected to Chains of Promathia.
What a fool I was...

Sarima had met me in the San d'Oria rent-a-room after a terrible night.
So bad, that I had decided to revert back to the things I knew I could do well.
And alone.
Quests.

Kupo? Master Kiamo what is the matter?

Oh Sarima... I wonder if it was a mistake to ever make the journey to Windurst.

Kiki... you know you had to get out of Rabao after what happened to you there...

I... Yes, let's not even revisit that. We can't change the past, right?

Right. What has you so downtrodden now Kiki?

Promyvion...

Again?

Again.
I thought if I had a plan, a schedule, that perhaps things would work out a little better.
So, with the permission of the linkshell leader, I placed an announcement in the linkshell message.
Every time someone puts on their pearl, they are met with this message.
It had a day and time and my contact information. Members were to tell me if they were available to attend.
When the time came, the very two who had bothered to communicate with me about it were missing.
One person who I thought had said he could not go, was coming.
Another person was making sure he had all the cut scenes and getting the proper items for the battle.
Another person who had said he would help if he was awake, had otherwise occupied himself.

I had really been looking forward to it. Thinking maybe we could get a couple done if others needed.
As it turned out, I was the only one ready by the time listed.
Half an hour later we had 4 people total committed to helping.
An hour after that... and with one member having stopped doing what they had planned on for the night... we finally were all en route to the crag of mea.

Once everyone was inside, I was trying to explain what to expect to the newest member.
Meanwhile our fill-in tank had run off to fight the memory receptacle without telling anyone.
"I can solo it" he had said when I asked him to please tell everyone when we were to move out.

We had no Ranger, so one of the very experienced members had to just run around, with us in tow, blindly looking for the blue glowing orb that we needed to fight.
At least when one of the empty spotted one of the party members on the top floor, we were able to kill it without being killed.

Finally we reached the room that held the Delver.
It was a strange looking thing with long spindle legs and a bloated oval body perched atop them.
Its frail guise betrayed us.
It had the power to hit all of us at once with some whip of a tail that it whirled in a circle.
I wonder if the lashes to my legs and arms will ever heal!

The fight started off well enough, but it turned out that none of the other fighters had explained to our new-comer that the anima shouldn't be used all at once.
I felt I had failed him, because I had explained the effects each on would have on the Delver, but not that he should only use one when called upon.
Then I noticed that even with a Cure II, I would catch the attention of the Delver.
I thought I had seen the Summoner use Astral Flow... and the Samurai use Meikyo Shisui..? If they had, I knew the monster needed to stay in one spot.
I ran toward the fighters to ensure it would not run about and had to stay there until I was sure it was no longer paying attention to me.
Which is when I received my beating by its tail.
As did we all.
However, as a mage, I can't take too much damage and soon I found myself face down on the cold chalky floor of the arena.
I could hear the other members muffled calls... something about "Get a DoT on it.. someone cast Bio!! It's almost dead..."
I knew our Red Mage was alive, but I didn't know how much mana he had at his disposal.
I wanted so badly to win... So when the Delver wasn't looking my way, I allowed my reraise enchantment to revive me.
At that same moment, the Delver slew the last fighter standing... and came for ME.
I had enough mana to either cure myself, or cast Bio.
Benediction
Bio...
Your casting is interrupted.

Of course it is.
And then once again I was face down on the cold chalky floor of the arena.
I couldn't allow myself to cry, but I wanted to.
I had completely and utterly failed everyone.
I couldn't even act quick enough to save anybody, do anything constructive. All I managed to do was expend my most powerful ability... for nothing!
All I managed to do was waste the time of five people.
Without another reraise enchantment, I wasn't even able to revive them.

We all had to Home Point and then it began...
The flinging of testimonials that Mea was the easiest.
That someone had used the wrong anima at a crucial time.

Had we not already been beaten down enough?
Why argue.. clearly it was not easy as we had just been decimated!
I thought to myself-- well if we could all be as perfect as you...
I felt bad enough about it on my own, I didn't want to hear any more of it!

Utterly defeated in mind and spirit, I sought the quietness of the airship to San d'Oria.
I was unable to sleep even at the late hour... so I took up a job delivering packages for an Elvaan.
Then I distributed fliers for the Magic Shop in Port San d'Oria.
By then the throbbing pain in my head was overwhelming and I went to rest in the rent-a-room, though sleep never wrapped her comforting arms about me that night.
