Sha-chan came calling.
The time had come.
We were to visit San d'Oria and Bastock, then face off against this demon dragon and its minion.
Despite my success with the Zu, I couldn't help notice the knot forming in my tummy.
I was afraid. Not for me, for Shagrath. Surely he is strong, but what if my healing talents were not enough? What if I could not protect he and his brother during the battles ahead? Was that not my true job? Surely "melee" protected me, but I in turn needed to protect them for that to happen.
I took the teleport from the Outpost and trudged up the steps into the residential area.
I quickly washed my face and had a drink of water, then sat for a moment on my bed thinking of what all I needed to take.
Sword for Ghelsba Outpost, wands for Waughroon Shrine.
Sha-chan had Ether for me as well that he had obtained from treasure boxes.
His brother would wait for us at Palborough Mines.
My lack of sleep coupled with the afternoon of training made me feel lightheaded... or was that simply nerves?
Our chocobo's raced quickly through Sarutabaruta, Tahrongi Canyon, the Meriphataud Mountains and Sauromugue Champaign.
The lurching and rocking of the chocobo running so fast and hard was serving to only worsen how I felt. My eyes began to glaze over and it was all I could do to keep focus on Sha-chan ahead of me.
Eventually we came to Jugner Forest. Here I could breathe easier as the air was not dry and thick with dust debris.
I took a glance around and saw tall trees who's branches seemed to weep as they dipped toward the ground. Their shaggy tendrils attempting to tickle me as I raced past. Tiny saplings skipped across the path dancing carelessly to a tune all their own.
Sha-chan was telling me how much he liked to train here.
Soon we emerged to La Theine Plateau. Wide green meadows and deep curious crevices welcomed us.
We stopped at the Crag of Holla so I could visit the tele-crystal, not to mention stretch our legs. My thighs were burning! I had never ridden a chocobo so far.
Do you want to walk from here or ride to San d'Oria?
Well, how far is it to San d'Oria from here?
Sha-chan unrolled a piece of parchment he had with the map painted on it. He pointed to the crag, indicating where we were.
And this is West Ronfaure, we need to go through there to get to the Kingdom of San d'Oria.
Let's ride.
If I thought my legs hurt now, surely I would faint if we walked.
When we finally arrived in San d'Oria there was music playing. It was a noble bagpipe tune of sorts.
We went to speak to three different people. The last one, Halver, wanted us to go to Ghelsba Outpost.
Will we be able to take on Warchief Vatgit just the two of us?
Sure we will! He's a push-over! Don't worry.
After wandering around lost- I mean going on an exciting adventure in Ghelsba Outpost, we found the Orc and it turned out he really was no match for Protector Puppeteer!
We reported our success back to Kasaroro, who sent us on our way to Bastok.
I barely remember that ride. I wasn't even afraid of the dragon anymore. Fatigue had taken fear's place.
I do remember the North Gustaberg leg of the trip.
Perhaps at one time it might have been lush like La Theine Plateau. Now it looked as though the hills had been run over by things too huge and heavy. There was no grass, only dirt and mud and dried up shrubs that seemed ancient. The mountains looked like they had been blasted apart with purpose. The wounds never to heal.
Ugly dead hulks of hoary trees reached out from the rock face. Their sharp talons wishing to claw and tear at whomever or whatever got too close.
Bastok is an industrial city. Machine replaces magic here.
I wondered if something they built caused the outer landscape to look as it did.
There was no time to ponder about that, though. Shagrath and I hurried out to Palborough Mines to meet up with his brother.
When I saw him, I was surprised to meet an Elvaan! Sha-chan is a Hume!
The two men made very quick work of the Quadav, (a curious breed of beastmen that reminded me of armadillo-turtle's), on our route through the mines.
I found it odd that they could only hear and not see me. As long as I kept my sneak enchantment up, I could practically walk into one and it would be none the wiser!
Before I knew it, we were at the shrine.
I gulped, took a deep breath and took us in. I was too tired to be fearful. I decided I would cure and use whatever other spells required until every ounce of mana was gone from me!
As it turned out, that wasn't necessary.
Sha-chan's brother is a Blue Mage.
Blue Mages are very powerful!
I thought I was drrreaming when I saw both demonic creatures laying on the floor, motionless!
I was ready to collapse after that. Sha-chan and his brother patiently took me back to Bastok via some ferry-boat type contraption.
I didn't even care if the Bastok rent-a-room had a bed... But was overjoyed when I saw it did and just fell forward into it and passed out!
